Runway ML Review: Is AI Video Generation Actually Usable Yet?

AI image generation changed everything. AI video is supposed to be next.

I spent a month with Runway ML, one of the leading AI video tools, trying to use it for actual video projects. Here’s the honest review.

What Runway Actually Offers

Runway is less “AI video creator” and more “AI video toolkit.” It has:

Generation features:

Editing features:

• Background removal (Green Screen)
• Inpainting (remove objects)
• Super Slow Motion

The toolkit approach is smart. Some features are very useful; others are tech demos.

The Features Worth Using

Green Screen (Background Removal)

This is genuinely good. Upload video with a subject, Runway removes the background.

Quality: 8/10 - Handles most footage well. Struggles with fine hair and complex edges, like all tools.

Speed: Fast enough for practical use

Value: Previously required expensive software or rotoscoping. Now one click.

Verdict: Worth the subscription just for this if you do video editing.

Inpainting (Object Removal)

Remove unwanted objects from video frames. Draw a mask, AI fills it in.

Quality: 7/10 - Good for simple removals. Complex scenes or moving objects get messy.

Best for: Removing logos, signs, small distracting elements

Verdict: Useful but not magic. Simple removals work; complex ones need traditional methods.

Super Slow Motion

Turn regular footage into slow motion without the artifacts.

Quality: 7/10 - Impressive for basic footage. Fast motion or complex scenes create weird artifacts.

Best for: Simple slow motion needs without proper equipment

Verdict: Nice to have. Not a replacement for actual high-frame-rate footage.

The Features That Aren’t Ready

Gen-2 (Text/Image to Video)

This is what everyone wants: type description, get video.

Reality check: The output is 4-16 second clips that look… dreamy? Surreal? Definitely not realistic.

What it’s good for:

• Abstract backgrounds
• Artistic/experimental content
• Music video aesthetics
• Social media visual effects

What it’s NOT good for:

• Realistic footage
• Product videos
• Any business content requiring normal-looking video
• Anything requiring specific actions or timing

My test: “A person walking through a modern office, talking on phone, looking professional.”

Result: Something that vaguely resembled the description but looked AI-generated. Movements were uncanny. Not usable for any professional purpose.

Verdict: Impressive tech demo. Not production-ready for realistic content.

Video Extension

Extend video clips beyond their original length. AI generates new frames.

Quality: 5/10 - Sometimes works, often produces weird results. Movements become unnatural.

Verdict: Unreliable. Maybe useful for specific artistic effects.

The Pricing Reality

Free: 125 credits to start (not enough to really evaluate)

Standard: $12/month - 625 credits Pro: $28/month - 2250 credits Unlimited: $76/month - Unlimited generation

Credit math: One Gen-2 generation (5 seconds) costs about 50 credits. So Standard gets you ~12 generations per month.

That’s not much if you’re experimenting.

My recommendation: If you just need Green Screen and basic editing features, Standard is fine. If you want to seriously use Gen-2, you need Pro or higher.

Who Should Use Runway

Yes, Use Runway If:

• You edit video and need background removal
• You do music videos or abstract visual content
• You want to experiment with AI video aesthetics
• You need specific AI editing tools (inpainting, etc.)

Not Worth It If:

• You want AI to create videos for you from scratch
• You need realistic footage
• You’re making standard business/marketing videos
• You’re expecting results like AI image generation (not there yet)

The Comparison to AI Images

AI image generation (Midjourney, DALL-E) can create professional-quality images that pass as photographs.

AI video generation in 2026 cannot create professional-quality video that passes as real footage.

The gap is significant. Don’t expect to type a prompt and get usable video.

What I Actually Use It For

After a month, here’s my Runway workflow:

Green Screen: Regularly. Saves hours on background removal.

Inpainting: Occasionally. When it works, it’s great.

Gen-2: Rarely. Only for abstract backgrounds or experimental content.

The editing tools justify the subscription. The generation features are bonuses for specific creative needs.

The Future vs. Present

Is AI video generation the future? Almost certainly.

Is it ready now? For editing tools, yes. For generation, not for mainstream use.

In 2-3 years, this review will probably be obsolete. Gen-3 or Gen-4 might be the breakthrough.

For now, Runway is:

• Great AI video editing toolkit
• Interesting experimental generation tool
• Not yet a video creation solution

Bottom Line

Rating: 7/10 - Excellent for AI-powered editing features, especially background removal. Generation features are impressive tech but not yet practical for most real work.

Verdict: Worth it for video editors who want AI tools. Not worth it if you expect AI to create videos for you.

Who should subscribe: Video editors who do background removal regularly. Experimental content creators. People who want to play with cutting-edge AI.

Who should wait: Anyone expecting ChatGPT-for-video. We’re not there yet.
