Raycast AI Review 2026: When Your Launcher Becomes Your Assistant
Raycast is a launcher. You hit command-space, type a few letters, and an app opens, a calculator works out a number, or a custom command runs. It replaced Spotlight on my Mac three years ago and I’ve never looked back.
In 2024 Raycast started adding AI features. In 2026 those features are the reason a lot of people pay for it. Here’s how Raycast AI actually fits into daily work, and whether the subscription makes sense.
What Raycast AI Is
Raycast AI is a set of AI features built into the Raycast launcher:
- AI Chat: Talk to GPT, Claude, or other models from the launcher window
- AI Commands: Pre-built and custom commands (translate, summarize, rewrite) that operate on selected text or input
- AI Quick Access: Hotkey-triggered AI on whatever you have selected
- AI in Extensions: Third-party extensions that lean on AI for their functionality
The unifying idea: AI access where you already work, not in a separate browser tab.
What It’s Good At
Fast text operations. Highlight an email draft, hit a hotkey, get it rewritten more concisely. Translate a paragraph without leaving your editor. Summarize a long Slack thread by piping it through an AI command.
Custom commands. Define your own commands with custom prompts. My favorite is a “polish-this” command that takes selected text, runs it through Claude with a specific style guide, and pastes the cleaned version back.
Quick AI in any app. Mail, Slack, Notion, VS Code — your AI is one hotkey away. The friction of opening a browser tab adds up over a day; eliminating it adds up too.
Privacy mode for Pro. Raycast claims to not train on or retain your prompts. For people who’d otherwise be pasting sensitive work into ChatGPT.com, the privacy posture is meaningfully better.
What It Isn’t Good At
Long conversations. AI Chat is fine for single-turn questions. For complex multi-turn conversations with context buildup, you still want the full Claude.ai or ChatGPT interface.
File uploads. Limited. You can paste content but full PDF or image workflows aren’t as smooth as the native AI apps.
Cost vs. ChatGPT.com. If you only use AI through Raycast occasionally, the $10/mo Pro tier is hard to justify over a free Claude or ChatGPT account.
Windows feature parity. As of mid-2026, Windows Raycast is functional but trails Mac. AI features work, the surrounding ecosystem doesn’t.

The sweet spot for most users is Pro at $10. Advanced AI is worth it only if you’re heavily reliant on the strongest models and want generous usage limits.
How It Compares
vs. Spotlight + ChatGPT app: Free, decent, but context-switchy. Raycast wins for anyone who does more than basic searches.
vs. Alfred + custom workflows: Alfred is the power user’s launcher. More customizable, no built-in AI. If you’ve already invested in Alfred workflows, the switching cost is real.
vs. Apple Intelligence: Free, OS-integrated, getting better. For light AI tasks on a new Mac, it’ll cover you. For depth and flexibility, Raycast is ahead.
vs. PowerToys Run + AI on Windows: PowerToys is free and decent. Raycast on Windows is more polished but still has fewer integrations.
One Honest Opinion
Raycast AI isn’t the smartest AI assistant or the cheapest. It’s the most ergonomic one for people who already live in their keyboard launcher. The value proposition is friction reduction, not capability.
If you don’t use a launcher heavily, install Raycast first, get used to it for two weeks, then decide if you want the AI features. Buying Pro before you’ve built the launcher habit means paying for a tool you won’t use.
If you already live in Raycast (or Alfred, or any launcher), the AI tier is one of the better $10/month upgrades I’ve made. It quietly absorbs about a dozen small AI interactions a day that I used to do in browser tabs. Over a year, that’s hundreds of context switches eliminated. Quiet wins like this are usually the ones that stick.
