Notion vs Obsidian with AI: Which Wins?
I’ve used Notion for 3 years and Obsidian for 2 years. They’re different tools for different needs. Now both have AI options.
Here’s how they actually compare when AI enters the equation.
The Fundamental Difference
Before AI even matters, understand this:
Notion: Cloud-first, collaborative, database-focused. Great for teams and structured data. Your notes live on their servers.
Obsidian: Local-first, personal, connection-focused. Great for personal knowledge management. Your notes are just files on your computer.
These philosophies affect how AI works in each.
Notion AI ($10/month add-on)
What it does:
- Write with AI (drafts, summaries, translations)
- AI-powered Q&A across your workspace
- Autofill database properties
- Brainstorming and outlining
What I like:
Convenience. It’s just there. Highlight text, click “Ask AI,” done. No setup, no context switching.
Workspace knowledge. The Q&A feature knows your content. “What did we discuss about Project X?” works if the info is in your Notion.
Database automation. Auto-generating summaries, extracting dates, categorizing content - this is genuinely useful.
What I don’t like:
Price on top of price. Already paying for Notion Plus ($8/month)? AI is another $10. That’s $18/month for notes.
Not better than ChatGPT. The writing features are basically ChatGPT embedded. If you’re already using ChatGPT ($20/month), Notion AI is redundant for most tasks.
Limited control. You get what Notion built. Can’t swap models, can’t customize behavior.
My verdict on Notion AI:
I used it for 2 months. Cancelled. The convenience didn’t justify $10/month when I’m already paying for Claude.
The database autofill is legitimately useful. If that’s your main need, it might be worth it.
Obsidian AI Options
Obsidian doesn’t have built-in AI. You need plugins. This means more setup but more flexibility.
Option 1: Smart Connections Plugin (Free)
What it does: Uses local AI to find connections between your notes.
What I like:
- Works offline
- Privacy (nothing sent to cloud)
- Finds surprising connections
What I don’t like:
- Requires local AI setup (Ollama, etc.)
- Not as powerful as cloud models
Best for: Privacy-focused users who want AI assistance without sharing notes.
Option 2: Copilot Plugin (Free, requires API keys)
What it does: ChatGPT/Claude integration in Obsidian.
What I like:
- Use any model you want
- More powerful than Notion AI
- Pay only for what you use
What I don’t like:
- Requires API setup
- Need to manage costs
- More technical
Best for: Power users who want maximum capability and don’t mind setup.
Option 3: Text Generator Plugin (Free)
What it does: Versatile text generation with templates.
What I like:
- Highly customizable
- Works with multiple providers
- Template system is powerful
Best for: Users who want to craft specific AI workflows.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | Notion AI | Obsidian + Plugins |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | One click | 30-60 min |
| Monthly cost | $10 fixed | $0-20 variable |
| Quality | Good | Can be better |
| Privacy | Cloud-based | Local option available |
| Customization | Limited | Extensive |
| Works offline | No | Yes (with local AI) |
| Workspace search | Excellent | Plugin-dependent |
For Different Users
Use Notion AI if:
- You’re already all-in on Notion
- You want zero setup
- You need database automation specifically
- Team collaboration matters
- You don’t already pay for ChatGPT/Claude
Use Obsidian with AI plugins if:
- You prefer local-first notes
- Privacy matters (your notes stay on your computer)
- You want to choose your AI model
- You’re comfortable with some technical setup
- You already have ChatGPT/Claude API access
Use neither if:
- You just need basic note-taking
- AI features aren’t useful to your workflow
- Budget is tight (both are optional expenses)
My Actual Setup
For work (collaborative): Notion without Notion AI. I use Claude in a separate tab for AI tasks. Copy-paste as needed.
For personal knowledge (PKM): Obsidian with Smart Connections for local connections, Claude API for occasional generation via Copilot plugin.
Total AI cost: Whatever I’m already paying for Claude Pro. No extra subscriptions.
The Real Question
Here’s what I’ve realized: the note-taking tool matters less than the workflow.
Both Notion and Obsidian are excellent. Adding AI makes them slightly better at certain tasks but doesn’t transform them.
The fundamental difference - cloud-collaborative vs local-personal - matters more than AI features. Choose based on that.
If You’re Choosing Now
Choose Notion if:
- Teams and collaboration are primary
- You like structured databases
- You want everything in one cloud
- Setup time = zero
Choose Obsidian if:
- Personal knowledge management is primary
- Privacy and local files matter
- You like linking ideas freely
- You’re okay with some configuration
Then add AI if:
- You’ve used the tool enough to know what’s slow
- Specific AI features would save meaningful time
- The cost makes sense for your use
Don’t choose a note app based on AI features. Choose based on fundamental workflow, then add AI where it helps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Notion for collaboration and databases. Obsidian for personal knowledge management and local-first privacy. With AI: Notion AI is built-in but costs extra. Obsidian needs plugins but offers more flexibility.
If you write extensively in Notion, maybe. Notion AI is convenient but not better than ChatGPT. If you already pay for ChatGPT/Claude, Notion AI is redundant. I cancelled after 2 months.
Not built-in. Community plugins add AI features. Best option: Smart Connections plugin for local AI, or Copilot plugin for OpenAI/Claude integration. More setup than Notion but more control.
