Canva AI Features: Which Ones Are Actually Useful

Canva keeps adding AI features. Magic this, Magic that. It’s getting hard to track what’s actually useful versus what’s just buzzwords.

I use Canva almost daily for social graphics, presentations, and quick design work. Here’s my honest take on each AI feature.

The Features That Actually Matter

Background Remover - 10/10

This alone might be worth Canva Pro.

Upload any image. One click. Background gone. It works maybe 95% of the time on the first try.

Before this existed, I either used Photoshop (slow) or paid for remove.bg credits. Now it’s just built into my workflow.

When it struggles: Very fine hair, complex edges, objects that blend with background. But even then, it’s close enough to fix manually.

Magic Resize - 9/10

Design once, resize for every platform instantly.

I create an Instagram post. Click Magic Resize. Now I have versions for Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, Stories - all adjusted automatically.

Does it always look perfect? No. Sometimes elements overlap after resizing. But it gets you 80% there, and the remaining 20% takes a minute to fix.

Time saved: Probably 20-30 minutes per design that needs multiple formats.

Magic Eraser - 8/10

Remove unwanted objects from images. Works like Photoshop’s content-aware fill but way easier.

I use this constantly for:

• Removing watermarks (on images I have rights to)
• Cleaning up product photos
• Removing photobombers from team photos
• Getting rid of distracting background elements

When it fails: Large objects, complex patterns, anything near the edge of the image. Small to medium objects in simple areas work great.

Magic Write - 7/10

AI-generated text inside Canva. It’s basically ChatGPT but integrated.

Useful for:

• Quick headlines when you’re stuck
• Social media captions
• Tagline variations
• Expanding bullet points into paragraphs

Why not 10/10: The writing quality is fine but not great. If I need good copy, I use Claude. Magic Write is for “good enough” situations when I don’t want to switch tools.

The Features That Are Just Okay

AI Image Generator - 6/10

Canva’s text-to-image is… fine. It’s not Midjourney. It’s not even DALL-E 3.

Good for:

• Simple illustrations
• Abstract backgrounds
• Basic graphics where quality isn’t critical

Not good for:

• Anything you’d actually showcase
• Photorealistic images
• Complex scenes with multiple elements

I use it when I need a quick graphic and don’t want to leave Canva. For anything important, I generate in Midjourney or DALL-E and bring it into Canva.

Magic Animate - 5/10

Auto-animates your design elements. Some animations look good. Most look like early 2010s PowerPoint.

Useful if you need quick animated content and don’t care about polish. Not useful if you want animations that actually look professional.

Magic Morph - 4/10

Turns text and shapes into stylized versions. Cool tech demo, rarely useful in actual work.

I’ve used it maybe twice in six months. Both times were “let me try this” rather than solving an actual problem.

Beat Sync - 5/10

For video editing - syncs your cuts to music beats. Works okay but the video editor itself is limited. If you’re doing real video work, you’re not using Canva.

Features I Forget Exist

Translate

Does what it says. I’ve never needed it.

Magic Grab

Separates elements from images automatically. Occasionally useful but I usually just use Background Remover.

Text to Video

Generates video from text prompts. The quality is not good enough for anything professional.

The Honest Verdict

Canva Pro with AI is worth it if:

• You design anything regularly (social posts, presentations, graphics)
• You’re not a professional designer
• You value speed over perfection
• $13/month is trivial for your budget

The AI features that justify the cost:

1. Background Remover
2. Magic Resize
3. Magic Eraser
4. Magic Write (for quick copy)

Everything else is nice-to-have at best.

What Canva AI won’t do:

• Replace a real designer for important work
• Generate quality images like Midjourney
• Create complex animations
• Handle professional video editing

My Actual Workflow

1. Concept: Figure out what I’m making (usually in my head or quick notes)
2. Template: Start from a Canva template or previous design
3. Images: Use Canva’s stock images, or generate in Midjourney/DALL-E and import
4. Background Remover: Clean up any images that need it
5. Magic Write: Generate copy options if I’m stuck
6. Design: Put it together manually
7. Magic Resize: Export for all needed platforms

Canva AI speeds up steps 4, 5, and 7 significantly. The rest is still manual work.

Bottom Line

Canva AI features are genuinely useful time-savers. They’re not magic and they won’t make you a designer. But they’ll make routine design work faster and easier.

If you’re currently using Canva Free, the AI features are the main reason to upgrade to Pro. If you’re not using Canva at all and do any design work, it’s worth trying.

Rating: 8/10 - Solid AI features that actually help. Just don’t expect miracles.
