AI in 2025: What We Think Will Happen
As 2024 wraps up, here are our predictions for AI in 2025. We’ll revisit this in December to see how we did.
Confident Predictions
AI Assistants Get Better at Following Instructions
The biggest frustration with current AI is inconsistency. Ask the same question twice, get different answers. We expect major improvements in reliability and instruction-following.
Prices Continue Dropping
API costs fell 10x in 2024. Expect similar drops in 2025. This means more AI-powered apps and features everywhere.
Local AI Becomes Practical
Running AI on your own computer is getting easier. By end of 2025, running a capable AI assistant locally (no cloud required) will be realistic for most users.
Multi-Modal Gets Real
AI that handles text, images, audio, and video together - not as separate tools - will become standard. Think: upload a video, ask questions about it.
Hopeful Predictions
AI Coding Assistants Improve Dramatically
Current tools are helpful but inconsistent. We expect 2025 versions to understand entire codebases, not just single files.
AI-Generated Content Gets Harder to Detect
This is a double-edged sword. Content quality will improve to where detection becomes nearly impossible. This will force new approaches to trust and verification.
Personalized AI Becomes Normal
AI that genuinely learns your preferences and adapts over time. Not just ChatGPT remembering facts, but truly personalized assistance.
What Won’t Happen
AGI Won’t Arrive
Despite the hype, artificial general intelligence isn’t coming in 2025. We’ll see incremental improvements, not a singularity.
AI Won’t Replace Most Jobs
AI will change jobs, eliminate some tasks, but mass unemployment from AI? Not in 2025. Probably not in 2030 either.
Perfect AI Video Won’t Emerge
We’ll see better AI video tools, but Hollywood-quality productions from text prompts? Not yet.
What to Prepare For
Learn Prompting (If You Haven’t)
The skill of communicating with AI matters more each year.
Expect AI in Your Tools
Your existing software will add AI features. Some will be useful, some will be marketing fluff.
Budget for AI Subscriptions
$20-50/month for AI tools will become as normal as Netflix subscriptions.
Stay Flexible
The tools that are best today might not be best in six months. Stay curious.
Our Scorecard
We’ll return to these predictions in December 2025. Our track record so far: about 70% accuracy on confident predictions, 40% on hopeful ones.
The only certain prediction: AI will continue surprising us.
